1980年シーズン、バリントンは病気のためシーズン中盤を欠場しましたが、その原因についてライダースクラブ1980-9では「胃の手術」になっていましたし、MOTOCOURSE1980-81でも「stomach operation」となっています。
ただ、stomachには「胃」と「腹部」の意味があります。
バリントンは、Ballington Unkorked: The Autobiography of a World Champion Road Racer by Kork Ballington, Redline Books 2008
で次のように書いていました。
He(doctor) found a section of the small intestine to be gangrenous and promptly removed it. He said it was a matter of a few hours before I was a goner. Subsequent tests showed that the most likely cause was a blood clot in the intestine.
と語っています。「小腸の血管の血栓による小腸の壊死」です。私の記事では「腸間膜動脈血栓症による小腸壊死」としました。
急性の腹痛が初期症状ですが、対処が遅れると死に至る重病です。バリントンも医師から数時間遅れば死ぬところだったと言われていました。
